Conch in the Cayman Islands

Conches are great for eating, but you have to follow a few rules if you plan to hunt them. They have colorful shells, and they can be found on the beach shores and in the oceans of the Cayman Islands

Conch is a popular type of food in the Cayman Islands, so you should definitely try some for dinner; however, there are a few rules you need to know about first. The rules are unique, but you must follow them when you visit in the Islands, otherwise you might get into some trouble. The rules are really quite simple, and once you understand them, you can go get your conches from either in the ocean or from a vendor. Once you have some, you can examine their unique colorful shells, but if you are hungry, you might want to eat them instead.

One of the easiest ways to find conches on your own is by snorkeling, when you find some, here are the rules you must follow. If you find a conch between the months of May and Oct, you are not allowed to catch or cook it, so just leave it alone. This rule is very important, because during these times, conches are not allowed out of the water, so if you see someone selling or giving them away, tell that person the rules or just avoid them.

When it is finally conch season, you are free to catch them for examining or for eating, but there are still rules to follow. If you are alone, there is a 5-conch catch a day limit, and for people on a boat, there is a 10-catch limit. If you remember these rules, you will not have any problems dealing with conch in the Cayman Islands.

If you want see conches in their shell while you are in the Cayman Islands, the beach is a great place to go, Rum Point in particular. Conches come in many colors, and your kids will love viewing them; if you visit on right the day, you might find quite a few on the shore. If you cannot find any, you might want to try snorkeling in the ocean because they are usually close by.

Conches are also great for eating; however, the ones on the beach are sometimes very old, so watch out for them, and some conches are very tough to chew. If you never had conch before, it is best to visit a vendor that sells them instead of catching them yourself, this way you will be able to tell a good conch from a bad conch.

In The Cayman Islands, you can buy conches from Foster’s or Hurley’s; both places sell them already tenderized, so all you have to do is find a good recipe and eat them. Conchs are a well-known food in the Cayman Islands, and they have a mild flavor, sort of like scallops. If you catch them yourself, when you take them home, you have to remove them from their shells, which can be difficult. To remove the conches from their shells without any problems, just put them into your freezer overnight, and the next day, they will easily come out their shells with the help of some pliers.

Conchs make a good meal, so you should try them, but remember to follow the rules, and only hunt them within season
